About Mettje Swift
Mettje Swiftâs artwork emphasizes patterns, colors, light and motion. Her ability to sew at a young age prepared her for her future in fabric art, and her rough-and-tumble childhood on a tree farm taught her first-hand the laws of physics and kinetics.
Mettje has a rich educational background. In addition to receiving a degree in art from Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado, she studied French, theater arts, biology, and visual arts at three different colleges. She also studied informally in Paris and Rio de Janeiro. These diverse experiences, combined with exposure to Hopi and Navajo design in her home state of Colorado, influence her current work.
In 1978, Mettje began creating fabric art in the form of banners, costumes, puppets, and sculpture. She continues today in her 6,000 square-foot adobe warehouse in Del Norte, Colorado.
